Influence of the free surface on the powering and hydrodynamic performance of near surface submarines
Stephen Turnock (Maritime Engineering)
Submarines be they conventional large crewed vessels or smaller autonomous ones face particular challenges when operating at or just below the free surface. Their inherent response is controlled, often by design decisions made very early on in the design process. This PhD in collaboration with industry will seek to develop and validate computational based approaches to accurately predict the dynamic effects. While the focus is on a specific challenge the applications of research are widespread in the maritime domain as similar problems are encountered on floating platforms or renewable energy systems. The interaction of passing waves and the resultant motion response provide a challenge for conventional computational fluid dynamic approaches. The advent of overset allows such complex relative motion problems to be studied but there are still issues with the accuracy and validity of free surface capture methods applied in an overset approach in more depth on the balance of forces. The first phase of the research will be experimentally based using the large Boldrewood towing tank where a systematic series of test swill be carried out for a range of speeds, wave conditions and submarine attitude. The Delphin2 AUV developed at Southampton will form the basis of these tests. The insights gained into the physics will then support the development of suitably rapid design tools.
